Small sizes are shrunk from your image: a simple logo with thick shapes stays readable at 16 px, fine details and small text do not.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is the icon format of Windows and of website favicons. Unlike a PNG, one .ico file holds several sizes of the same icon, so the browser or the system picks the sharpest one for each place: tab, bookmark, taskbar or desktop.

Which sizes should a favicon have?

16 × 16 px for browser tabs, 32 × 32 px for high resolution screens and shortcuts, and 48 × 48 px for Windows. These three are selected by default. For a Windows application or folder icon, add 256 × 256 px.

How do I add the favicon to my website?

Name the file favicon.ico and put it at the root of your site, so it is reachable at yoursite.com/favicon.ico: browsers look for it there automatically. You can also declare it in the head of your pages with <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent in the icon. If your image is not square, it is centered on a transparent background instead of being stretched.

Can I convert a JPG or an SVG to ICO?

Yes. Despite the name, the converter accepts JPG, WEBP, SVG, GIF and every image your browser can open. For the best result, start from a square image of at least 256 × 256 px, or from an SVG.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The icon is created directly in your browser: your image never leaves your device.
